Although some believe open borders is a good thing, most Americans have come to the conclusion that some controls should be in place. They see homeless people in the streets. They argue that we can’t seem to figure out what to do with the population we have. Why let more people in?
A counter argument is that we need immigrants to pick crops and some other labor. The argument seems to be that all the immigrants are here illegally. Interesting assumption. My assumption was that they are all here legally. Who is right?
We don’t know. Why? Because the immigration laws were not being enforced. One of my sons has a construction business. He has hired legal immigrants. He has also hired licensed immigrant subcontractors. I was involved in looking up the law and the green card for an employee.
Someone said, I don’t get it. If the problem is that they are undocumented, why don’t they just get documentation? I explained that they are not just undocumented, they are here illegally and are not eligible for documentation.
If we find we need workers, then we need to change the law to let more people into the country. We also need to commit more resources to processing applications. We don’t know what changes need to be made until we enforce the laws we have.
Law enforcement has been a problem for the last four years. It hides the real issue of changing our immigration laws. That is not a new problem. There has been talk about immigration reform for decades.
A problem now is the growing number of people seeking asylum. They don’t just want to come to work. They fear for their lives.
I don’t have an answer. I do believe that most people would rather stay in their own country if they could live in peace and have a comfortable life. Of course, there are those in every society who choose violence and theft. That needs to stop in the other countries and not be imported here.
