The world is being turned upside down. We can no longer have legitimate discussions because we do not even know what words mean.
The World Health Organization provides the following definition: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Investopedia gives us the following definition of insurance: “Insurance is a contract, represented by a policy, in which a policyholder receives financial protection or reimbursement against losses from an insurance company. The company pools clients’ risks to make payments more affordable for the insured. Most people have some insurance: for their car, their house, their healthcare, or their life.”
Car insurance pays you if your car is damaged. It does not pay for normal wear. House insurance covers your home if it is damaged. It does not pay for normal wear. Life insurance does not pay for your life. Life insurance is really death insurance. It pays if you die under certain circumstances. Similar to life insurance, health insurance is also a misnomer. Health insurance does not pay for you to be healthy. It pays for care when you get sick.
To be clear, your so-called health insurance policy might pay for you to go to a gym and exercise. However, when it does that it is not being insurance. We have lost the idea of what insurance is and is not.
Insurance is not a policy to keep you healthy. There is no risk of loss for health. It can be argued that by covering things like nutrition, exercise and some forms of so-called healthcare, the risk of disease (losses covered by the insurance policy) might be reduced. It then fails to be insurance. Prevention of loss is not an insurable event.
Your health should be up to you. I walk three to eight miles every day. Nobody has to pay for a gym membership for me to be able to do that. I avoid most processed food. I have reduced my food consumption as I have aged. I exercise my upper body for about ten minutes every day. I feel great. I am happily married and enjoy being around family and friends. I see chiropractors and am working to rehabilitate my spine.
Some may think that I am healthy. I certainly seem to be in a state of absence of disease or infirmity. I seem to have complete physical, mental and social well-being. That does not mean that I will not have heart failure or stroke in the next minute. My risk is reduced. The main thing is I am enjoying my life.
Take control of your health. Enjoy your life. Do not be deceived into thinking your insurance policy is a health plan.
