Mental health is one of the most important and most difficult things to restore. The brain is both an electromagnetic and chemical organ. It can be altered by drugs. The electromagnetic properties can be recorded with electroencephalograms (EEG).
The brain is unquestionably the most important organ in your body. Some believe it controls and coordinates all body function. When I was in chiropractic college a speaker gave us something to consider.
“We all quote Gray’s Anatomy and say the brain and nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. We know that is a lie, right?”
He paused for effect. We sat in the auditorium afraid to even look at each other. He pointed to a side door in the auditorium.
“We can go out that door, across the alley and into the dissection lab. Every cadaver there has a brain and nervous system that isn’t controlling anything. What we work with is what is missing.”
If you were just your body, your brain would be in control. You would be a victim of your heredity and what has happened to you. Your brain would be the result of your genetics. The brain would change based on your experiences. You would have no control.
My experience is that I do have control. I can decide what to think. I can decide what I want to do, when my body is responding to me. Sometimes the body can get out of control.
I like to think of the body as like a computerized robot. It can be programmed to function without my control. In fact, I sometimes catch myself doing something because it has become a habit. It takes effort and concentration to change.
Some people have traumatic events in their lives that make changes to their brains. That can be difficult to control. There are different approaches to be tried. Psychiatrists are trained in talking and drugs. There is some evidence for the effects of electromagnetic fields on the brain, magnetic fields and laser light are a couple of examples.
B. J. Palmer, known as the Developer of Chiropractic, had three sanitariums. He was researching the effects of chiropractic care on mental health. He was finding that chiropractic care was better than many medical approaches at the time (mid 1900s).
Researchers are now looking at the effects of chiropractic care on the autonomic nervous system and how that could lead to improvement in brain disorders such as depression. (1) Remember to consider chiropractic care for mental health.
