Vision: Does your business need a little clarification?
Sometimes an outsider can help you.
One of the biggest problems an entrepreneur faces is vision. We have an idea, and we start out. Often, we do not know what we are doing. We just start. That is the first thing that separates the entrepreneur from average. We take risks.
As we go, we learn what we did not know. We often think we are almost there, only to discover something overlooked. We revamp our business and continue.
As we go the vision should become clearer. This week I asked two different start-up businesses what they would do differently. I think both would agree that they would not do anything differently. They had to go through a learning process.
The next question was a little more telling. If I run across a billionaire looking for an investment, how much would you want and what would you do with it? Neither business had a clear idea of how much they wanted or what an infusion of capital would mean for their businesses.
Both businesses are about ready to launch. Both businesses have been limited by lack of capital. Neither has developed a clear vision of how capital infusion would take their business to the next level.
That is where an outsider might be helpful. The help might not be about obtaining capital, but just help in clarifying exactly where you are and your vision.
People are attracted to a vision. Money follows. Too often we ask for money without giving the vision. I belonged to a chiropractic group. Someone wanted to have dues. I asked what we would do with the money. The response was, “I can always think of something to do with money.” I dropped out. There was no vision. They collected dues and spent the money on a Christmas party.
Got an idea for a business? Are you getting close to implementing it? Would you like a little help in clarifying your vision? Perhaps you could use an outsider. Hire a consultant. Let me know if I can help.
