How do we decide who will win our vote? Do we decide based on ideas and vision for the future? Or do we vote for someone who is most like us?
Without looking up references, I will tell you that I have read proposed mechanisms of the evolution of the brain. One idea is that the brain creates algorithms that automatically make decisions. The brain does that to preserve glucose – the energy needed for survival. If we make snap decisions without pondering something, we save a lot of energy.
Seems to make sense. That is an explanation for tribalism and what some would call racism. The algorithm is: If someone or something looks like me, it might be a friend. If it does not look like me, it might be an enemy.
Think about that in terms of uniforms on the battlefield. We know our enemies by the uniforms they wear. Wrong uniform – shoot.
Similarly, we wear uniforms during team sports. A quarterback can quickly recognize players down field by their uniforms. Without uniforms it would be much more difficult.
Now look at our presidential election. Using the algorithm, men vote for men – Trump. Women vote for women – Harris. Whites vote for whites – Trump. Blacks vote for blacks – Harris. There is no thinking involved.
Certainly, if we will not vote for someone based on skin color, we are racist. If we will not vote for someone because of gender, we are sexist. We should vote based on a candidate’s ideas and vision for the future.
Not according to former President Obama. He scolded black men for not voting for Vice President Harris because of her gender. He claimed that because her skin color was similar to theirs, they should vote for her. He assumed that the only reason they were not supporting her was sexism.
As one black man stated, if she can marry a white dude and choose a white dude for vice president, we can vote for a white dude.
I believe this election has clearly shown why we have divisions in this country. The political scientists are recommending that we be divided and a different message given to each group. That is why the news outlets tell how each candidate is doing with each group.
Some claim Harris is a better politician then Trump because she tailors her message to each group. They claim Trump says the same thing to all. In fact, CNN has found that her messages can be contradictory, depending on the group.
I would like to see a politician that can find common ground for all of us. Someone who can say the same thing to every group and still get our support. When that happens, that candidate will have beaten professional political science. Until that happens, we will continue to be divided.
Harris has proven she is not that politician.
I think this will be the most difficult election in American history because you have this strange inversion; If you want to vote for things that will help America become more safe, prosperous and free then you have to vote for a candidate that is harsh, unpolished and rude but that truly is fighting for our common interest.
Alternatively, if you want to vote for the candidate that is polished, appealing and looks diverse then you will end up with a president that supports some terrible ideas (also some good ideas like child tax benefits etc.) but overarching bad bad ideas mainly at the border and economically that will be disastrous for all of America.
Great article that highlights the strange choice we are all facing at the ballot box this year !
